Determined to showcase my skills, I invited my lure sponsor, Crazy Alberto Knie, to join me. As I landed permit after permit using his Tactical Anglers products, the crowd watched in amazement. I was the only one having success, and the atmosphere grew tense. Things took a turn for the worse when someone stole my plugs right as I was landing another fish. Ironically, despite having my “magic lure,” they couldn’t catch a thing. They simply didn’t understand the art of working the lure like a crab in the water to be effective.

The incident unfolded on a warm August morning. Rekar, a longtime resident of the area, had ventured out in a small fishing boat, hoping to capitalize on the favorable weather conditions. With a simple mackerel baited hook, he began drifting along the shoreline, casting his line into the depths.
As the sun began to climb higher in the sky, Rekar felt a sudden tug on his line. At first, he thought it might be a smaller fish, perhaps a striped bass or a fluke. But as the fish began to pull with increasing force, Rekar realized he was in for a fight.

“The fish you see is a smallmouth bass that was caught from Wildcat Lake in Boulder Junction Wisconsin.

Wildcat is one of three lakes in a chain. The others are Big and Little Kitten Lakes. They’re found just north of Boulder Junction on County M in Vilas County. Although these lakes are all Class A muskie waters, Wildcat is good for smallmouth bass. Largemouths can be caught on all three of the lakes. Crappies are very good there.

I look for rocks. Typically, smallies relate to the rocks while the largemouth relate to the weeds.   Another key to success there is to find rocks near deeper water. The smallmouth will move from deeper water up to shallower water and use rocky drop offs for their travel route.

I fish for these hard fighting fish with plastics. Tubes, beaver baits and wacky worms work well. If I had to choose one of the three, I’d go with a 5 inch Strike King Ocho or Shim E Stick worm fished wacky worm style. Keep in mind though that day by day will depict what these fish want. Wacky worms seem to work the best most often on these relatively clear lakes.

If I’m fishing shallow water, less than 5 feet, I’ll just use an octopus hook and no weights. If I’m finding fish on the drop offs and deeper water, I’ll use a wacky worm jig.

I enjoy fishing these lakes and so many others in the Boulder Junction area. Within 10 miles of town one can find 194 lakes to fish. There are no excuses for a bad day on the water. If one lake is not on, pull the boat out of the water and go down the road to another lake. You will find active fish somewhere be it on a large or small lake.

The smallie in the photo was caught at mid-day in late May on a wacky worm in about 15 feet of water near a rocky drop off. It was a pumpkinseed colored worm. Water temps were still pretty cool, in the low 60s and clear. You could tell the difference between a nickel and a quarter in 5 feet of water.

I fish the Boulder Junction area spring, summer and fall. In that it’s only about 6 hours from my suburban Chicagoland home, it’s an easy drive. And as I say at the end of all my TV shows, that means “Great fishing is not that far away/” tm.”

I generally write many fish stories on the US side of the Atlantic ocean,  but figured it would be exciting to highlight some amazing fish photos from the other side of the river.  A Facebook friend of mine Vlada Tadic has some amazing fish photos in his profile and he provided me some details about a recent fishing trip.  Vlada who lives in Loznica, Western Serbia fishes often in the Drina river.

He uses a variety of techniques to land some enormous Northern Pike.  On the day that he landed the monster depicted to the right he was using a fake bait of german origin called a “Profi-Blinker”.  It was caught in clear water on a sunny day.  The Drina river is between two countries, Bosnia and Serbia.  The fishing rod that was used was a 6 foot Lesath Shore Game rod.

Muskie’s are a beautiful fish that are very light in color compared to the Northern Pike.  Northern’s are darker with lighter spots where Muskies are Lighter with sometimes darker spots. The body shapes however are very similar as they come from the same family of fish. Like the Pike they are many sharp teeth so be very careful while handling them.  For some more basic information about fishing for Muskie’s be sure to visit our Muskie Fishing Tips page.

The Muskie depicted in the photo to the right was caught on Georgian Bay Ontario by Stephen Crook.

This Muskie was caught trolling outside an Island that has produced big fish generally by casting.  On the day that this monster Muskie was caught Stephen casted the island using bucktails and couldn’t locate a big fish that he had seen earlier in the day. It was getting toward dusk so he decided to troll crank baits in deeper water adjacent to the island.  The fish was caught on a Parrywinkle legendary Georgian Bay crank bait.  The reel used was a Shimano Tekota 500 LC trolling reel.  The Rod was a St. Croix Tournament Legend 8 foot rod.   A single strand handmade metal leader and 100 pound test braid was used to land this lunker.

Today I learned about an amazing non-profit organization through one of my Facebook friends called “Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing” and wanted to take a few minutes to make a posting to raise some awareness of the wonderful services they offer.  The work and services performed by this organization are amazing.  They are a national non-profit with chapters all over the country.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization incorporated in the State of Maryland. PHWFF receives no government funding and is dependent on tax-deductible, charitable donations and the help of numerous volunteers to meet the educational, equipment, transportation, and related needs of its participants.

The vision of this non-profit is to provide a full-spectrum fly fishing program to an ever-expanding number of disabled Active Duty Service Military and disabled Veterans.

In short this organization helps disabled vet’s learn how to tie flies, make rods and offers fishing trips to its members.
